Effect of Membrane Potential on Lateral Diffusion

چکیده
The rate of appearance , in a populat ion of mouse-human heterokaryons , of cells with intermixed mouse and human surface antigens may be used to estimate the rate of lateral diffusion of the antigens in a single cell. Most he terokaryons appear to restrict diffusion of their surface antigens. These restrictions are altered by exposing either he terokaryons or their parent cells to conditions that change cell surface membrane potential. Media containing unphysiological concentrat ions of potassium ion, drugs, affecting the Na +, K + ATPase , or a channel-forming antibiotic, gramicidin, all affect lateral mobility of cell surface antigens in a manner consistent with a c o m m o n effect on membrane potential.

متن کاملNumerical Investigation of the Effect of Gas Diffusion Layer with Semicircular Prominences on Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Performance and Species Distribution
A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with both gas distribution flow channels and Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is developed. A set of conservation equation is numerically solved by developing a CFD code based on the finite volume technique and SIMPLE algorithm. In this research, some parameters like oxygen consumption, water...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Non-Uniform Gas Diffusion Layer Porosity Effect on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance
Gas diffusion layers are essential components of proton exchange membrane fuel cell since the reactants should pass through these layers. Mass transport in these layers is highly dependent on porosity. Many of simulations have assumed, for simplicity, the porosity of GDL is constant, but in practice, there is a considerable variation in porosity along gas diffusion layers. In the present study ...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Membrane Potential Arising Across Densely Charged Ion Exchange Membranes: How Well Does the Teorell-Meyer-Sievers Theory Work?
A difference in salt concentration in two solutions separated by a membrane leads to an electrical potential difference across the membrane, also without applied current. A literature study is presented on proposed theories for the origin of this membrane potential (ϕm). The most well-known theoretical description is Teorell-Meyer-Sievers (TMS) theory, which we analyze and extend. Experimental ...
متن کاملDiffusion Rates of Cell Surface Antigens Heterokaryons III. Regulation of Lateral Diffusion Rates of Mouse-Human by Calcium Ions
In mouse-human heterokaryons, the lateral dif fusion of major histocompatibi l i ty (MHC) antigens in the plasma membrane is enhanced by treatment of parent cells wi th ouabain. Ouabain treatment is ineffective if the medium lacks calcium ion, or if Verapamil, a blocker of calcium channels, is present. The divalent ionophore A23187 also enhances lateral dif fusion of MHC antigens, to the same e...
